Quick answer
Do I need to file GSTR-9, and what if I get a GST notice?
GSTR-9 is due by 31 December and is optional up to ₹2 crore turnover; GSTR-9C is needed above ₹5 crore. A GST notice must be answered on the portal within the time given, usually 7 to 30 days, or it can turn into a demand.
GST annual return (GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C)
- GSTR-9 is the yearly summary of everything you reported in your monthly or quarterly returns. It is due by 31 December after the financial year ends. It is optional for businesses with turnover up to ₹2 crore.
- GSTR-9C is a reconciliation statement between your audited books and GSTR-9. It is required when turnover is above ₹5 crore.
The annual return is your last clean chance to catch mismatches before the department does. We reconcile:
- Sales in your books with GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B
- Input tax credit in your books with GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B
- Credit notes, amendments and tax paid through cash and credit
GST notices we handle
| What you received | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Scrutiny notice (ASMT-10) | The officer found differences in your returns and wants an explanation |
| DRC-01B | Tax declared in GSTR-1 is higher than tax paid in GSTR-3B |
| DRC-01C | Input tax credit claimed in GSTR-3B is higher than what appears in GSTR-2B |
| Show cause notice and DRC-01 | The department proposes a tax demand with interest and penalty |
| Registration cancellation notice | Usually for returns not filed for a long time |
How we respond
- Read the notice with you and explain in plain words what is being asked and by when.
- Reconcile the numbers behind it, so the reply is backed by data, not just a letter.
- Draft and file the reply on the GST portal, with supporting documents.
- Follow up with the officer and, if needed, attend the personal hearing. If an order goes against you, we help with the appeal, which generally must be filed within 3 months.
Do not ignore a GST notice. Most replies have a short deadline, and an unanswered notice usually becomes a demand order.
What clients say
I had a complicated GST issue due to an error in my GSTR-1 filing... Then I connected with Jerome, and my experience was completely different. He did not ask for any payment initially and patiently guided me over the phone. He has excellent knowledge of GST and took the time to understand my case in detail... I have now become his client, and I highly recommend him to anyone facing GST or ITR-related issues

It means the input tax credit you claimed is more than what appears in GSTR-2B. You need to either pay the difference or explain it on the portal within the time given. Send us the intimation and your purchase details.
Can I correct a mistake in a GSTR-1 or 3B I already filed?
