Quick answer
When do I need GST registration in Tamil Nadu?
Once your yearly turnover crosses ₹40 lakh if you sell only goods, or ₹20 lakh if you provide services. You need it earlier if you sell goods to other states or through most e-commerce platforms.
Who needs GST registration?
In Tamil Nadu, you generally need to register when:
- You sell goods and your yearly turnover crosses ₹40 lakh.
- You provide services and your yearly turnover crosses ₹20 lakh.
- You sell goods to customers in other states, whatever your turnover.
- You sell through e-commerce platforms such as Amazon or Flipkart (some small sellers are exempt, and we check this for you).
- Your customers want a GSTIN on your invoice, even though you are below the limit. This is called voluntary registration.

Regular scheme or composition scheme?
This is the most important choice at registration, because it decides how much tax you pay and how often you file.
| Regular scheme | Composition scheme | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | Most businesses, anyone selling to other GST-registered businesses | Small traders, manufacturers, restaurants and small service providers selling mainly to consumers |
| Turnover limit | No upper limit | Up to ₹1.5 crore (goods and restaurants), up to ₹50 lakh (services) |
| Tax | Normal GST rates, with input tax credit | A small fixed rate on turnover: 1% for traders and manufacturers, 5% for restaurants, 6% for services. No input tax credit |
| Returns | Monthly or quarterly | Quarterly payment and one annual return |
| Inter-state sales | Allowed | Not allowed for goods |
Small businesses that expect a low monthly GST liability may also qualify for the simplified registration route, which gives faster approval. We will tell you if it suits you.

How it works
- Tell us about your business on WhatsApp or a quick call. We confirm whether you need GST and which scheme suits you.
- Send your documents as photos or PDFs. We check them before anything is filed, because most rejections come from small document mistakes.
- We file the application and you complete Aadhaar authentication with an OTP. If the department asks for a biometric visit to a GST Suvidha Kendra, we tell you exactly what to carry.
- We handle the officer's queries until approval, then send you your GSTIN certificate, your filing calendar and the next steps.
After you get your GSTIN
- Add your bank account on the GST portal within 30 days of registration. We do this with you.
- File returns every month or quarter, even when you have no sales. Missing nil returns still attracts late fees.
- Show your GSTIN on your invoices and name board.
We can take over your GST return filing from the first month, so nothing is missed.

Common questions
How much does GST registration cost in Chennai?
The government charges nothing for GST registration. You pay only a professional fee to whoever prepares and files it for you. Our fee depends on the type of business (proprietor, partnership, LLP or company), how many places of business you have and how ready your documents are. Tell us about your business on WhatsApp and you get a clear quote before any work starts.
Do I need an auditor for GST registration?
No law requires one. You can apply yourself on the GST portal. Most people use an auditor or tax consultant to pick the right registration type, get the documents right the first time and answer the officer's questions, so the application is not rejected or delayed. That is what we do for you.
Can I register GST at my home address?
Yes, if you run the business from home. You will need an address proof such as the EB bill or property tax receipt, and a consent letter from the owner if the house is not in your name.
How long does GST registration take?
When Aadhaar authentication is completed and the officer has no questions, approval usually comes in about 7 working days. If the officer asks for clarification or a physical verification, it takes longer. We reply to these queries for you.
I only provide services in Tamil Nadu and earn less than ₹20 lakh a year. Do I need GST?
Generally no. There are a few special cases where registration is still required, so send us a message and we will check yours.
What happens if I register and then have no sales?
You still need to file nil returns on time. If the business has stopped, it is better to apply for cancellation than to keep missing returns.
