Quick answer
Do I need to apply for PAN 2.0?
No. Your existing PAN stays valid; apply for the new QR-coded card only if you need a reprint or want to update your name or address.
PAN 2.0 is the new generation of Permanent Account Number cards the Income Tax Department is rolling out. New cards carry a dynamic QR code that validates your PAN in real time and makes forgeries much harder.
Do you need a new card?
No. Your existing PAN number stays the same and remains valid. You only need to apply for a PAN 2.0 card if you want the new physical card with the QR code, or if you need to update details like your address or name.
When to actually apply
- You are changing your name after marriage and updating records
- You are updating your address on record
- You lost your physical card and need a reprint
- You want the added security of the QR-coded version
For everyone else, there is no deadline and no penalty for keeping your existing card. Anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you a service you do not need.
Your existing PAN works fine. The new card is an option, not a requirement.Jerome R
If you do apply, use only the official portals (Protean, formerly NSDL, or UTIITSL). Fees are small and are shown on the portal before you pay. Processing takes about two weeks.
