Quick answer
What is a Section 143(1) intimation?
It is the processing summary of your ITR, showing no change, a refund or a demand. Only a demand or a smaller refund than expected needs action, usually a reply or rectification on the e-filing portal.
A Section 143(1) intimation is the most common tax notice in India. Most people who file an ITR receive one after their return is processed. It is not a scrutiny, it is not a penalty, and most of the time no action is needed.
What it is
The department processes your ITR using automated systems and sends you a summary of how the numbers matched up. There are three possible outcomes: no change, refund due, or demand due.
When to worry
Only if there is a demand (additional tax payable) or if the refund is less than you expected. Both usually mean a mismatch between your ITR and Form 26AS or AIS.
Common causes of adjustment
- TDS shown in your ITR does not match what appears in Form 26AS
- Interest income from fixed deposits not reported
- Rental income reported differently from the tenant's TDS data
- Deductions claimed that do not match the information the department has
How to respond
If there is a demand, respond on the e-filing portal within the time given: either pay it, or say you disagree with reasons. If the department made an error, file a rectification request under Section 154. Do not ignore it. Ignored demands can be adjusted against future refunds or lead to recovery action.
If the intimation matches your ITR and there is no demand, just file it away. No response is needed.
